Kandy

Kandy, city in the Central Highlands of ithe island, at an elevation of 1,640 feet (500 metres). In 1592 it became the capital of the Sri Lankan kings, who preserved their independence during the period of European colonial rule—except for temporary occupations by the Portuguese and the Dutch—until 1815, when the British ousted Sri Wickrama Rajasinha.

Pinnawala is popular because of the Elephant Orphanage which  is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Sri Lankan elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.  Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular and wonderful animal attractions.

Nuwaraeliya

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka and is the country’s most essential tea production hub. You must have seen pictures of people on train getting clicked with beautiful scenery in the background yes that is one of the scenic train rides from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya offering breathtaking views. Some of the most popular sites to explore Nuwara Eliya are Ramboda waterfall, Tea plantations, Gregory lake, Victoria park… Etc.

Ramboda Falls considered as one of the most beautiful water falls in Sri lanka.

This unique and beautiful Ramboda falls sight can be seen at the Pussellawa area of Nuwara Eliya, at the Ramboda Pass. The Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka or Ramboda Ella or Puna Ella as these falls are called is created from Puna Oya, a tributary of Kothmale Oya. It makes a twin with Dunsinane Falls which is created by Pundalu Oya, also a tributary of Kothmale River, and combines at the base to form a Y shape.

Nuwara Eliya, a land of tea estates and waterfalls! Residing in the hill country in eternal winter temperate, covered with blankets of mist, and charmingly called as “Little England of Sri Lanka”. No matter which direction you gaze, the rolling hills decked up with green tea leaves will be a sight to behold.

For visiting the tea factories, there are no entry charges.You will also be accompanied by a guide who will explain the entire procedure  from tea plantation to tea packaging. Don’t forget to enjoy a hot cup of tea after the trip.

AMBEWELA farm

Located in the hill station known as Ambewela (also fondly called ‘Little New Zealand’) is the famous Ambewela Farm. About 17km away from Nuwara Eliya, the farm seems rather out of place compared to the rest of Sri Lanka.

The farm was actually started with the help of the New Zealand government sometime in the ‘60s, and aside from producing milk, yoghurt, cream, and cheese, the farm is also a popular destination in Nuwara Eliya for foreigners and locals alike.

Hakgala garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden is the second largest garden among the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka and is contiguous to Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve, which is the home to a variety of wild life, including bears, monkeys and birds. Situated some 5 kilometers South of Nuwara Eliya, the road to Hakgala along the Badulla road is a pleasant downhill drive, mostly through pine forests. The comfortable cool weather that prevails throughout the year compliments the exotic flora and fauna, creating a true paradise. It boasts thousands of flora species.

Horton Plains

Horton Plains, Sri Lanka’s only national park declared a World Heritage Site, is an eerie highland plateau popular with hikers. A circular trail of 10 km length winds through cloud forests and open grasslands. Major attractions are scenic spots such as Baker’s Falls and the two spectacular panoramic viewpoints called “Big World’s End” and “Litte World’s End”. Horton Plains, situated at an elevation of more than 2000 meters above sea level, is Sri Lanka’s only national park within the hill country and the only one where hiking  is permitted without ranger, though strict rules have to be observed within the national park boundaries.

Ella

Ella is the place to relax. You definitely want to stay here for a few days. Ella is surrounded by rainforest, many waterfalls and endless green hills. The temperature is pleasant and fresh compared to the rest of Sri Lanka. The city is located approximately 1000 meters above sea level which makes it perfect for growing tea and strawberries. In the evening it cools a bit down so you can sleep well underneath your thick blankets.
